At SolaREIT, our mission to accelerate the clean energy transition is powered by the talented individuals behind our work. Each month, we highlight a team member whose expertise and dedication help move our projects forward. This month, we are pleased to spotlight Stuart Sopko, Analyst at SolaREIT, whose background in geography, infrastructure, and renewable energy finance brings a thoughtful, land-focused perspective to our expanding company.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I’m originally from Pennsylvania and grew up in a small town surrounded by woods and waterfalls, which sparked my appreciation for the outdoors at an early age. I attended Colgate University, where I double majored in Geography and Spanish, and studied abroad in Salamanca, Spain during my junior year, which was one of the highlights of my college experience. My academic background focused heavily on the built environment, housing, and infrastructure, which ultimately led me to the renewable energy industry through a land-focused lens.
What inspired you to join SolaREIT?
I came to SolaREIT with firsthand experience in independent power production, where I developed a deep understanding of how renewable energy projects are built from the ground up and what is needed to keep them operating. SolaREIT sits at the intersection of energy and real estate, which aligned closely with both my academic interests and professional goals. The opportunity to also gain exposure to the finance side of the business has made the experience especially engaging and rewarding.
What has been your most rewarding experience at SolaREIT?
One of the most rewarding aspects of working at SolaREIT has been building relationships across the organization and collaborating with different teams. More recently, I’ve taken on the responsibility for managing the weekly asset management call focused on post-close items. It was my first experience leading a recurring cross-functional process, coordinating internally across teams and externally with counterparties. While I was initially nervous stepping into that role, the support and positive feedback I received from the team made the experience incredibly rewarding.
How do you see the future of renewable energy and SolaREIT’s role in it?
As the energy landscape becomes increasingly complex, both from a development and financing perspective, I believe the industry will continue to demand more innovative solutions. SolaREIT’s expertise in land financing is a strong example of how creative capital solutions can help projects move forward in an evolving market.
At the same time, growing conversations around AI, data centers, and energy demand are bringing increased attention to the value of powered land. While data centers are not SolaREIT’s commercial focus, they highlight the growing intersection between land and energy infrastructure. I believe SolaREIT’s experience in this space positions the company well as these conversations continue to evolve.
What has surprised you most about working at SolaREIT?
I continue to be impressed by the depth of knowledge and capability across the team. As someone early in my career, having the opportunity to learn from colleagues with significant experience across the industry has been incredibly valuable. Everyone has been supportive of my growth and willing to share their expertise.
What do you enjoy doing outside of the office?
Since relocating to Washington, D.C. from New York earlier this year, I’ve enjoyed exploring the city’s museums and restaurants. I’m also a big movie fan and enjoy playing golf and tennis. Outside of work, I love traveling and am looking forward to visiting Quebec and Japan this summer.
